On the heels of a seismic shift in the organization’s scope of impact and footprint, we are building onto our existing talent structure with the addition of a Major Gifts Officer. Exhibiting a balanced blend of strategic foresight and innovative thinking, the Major Gifts Officer will secure significant annual private support from individual donors and foundations, laying a robust foundation for the ongoing sustainability and advancement of the organization. The purview of the Major Gifts Officer extends beyond securing major gifts. Their role is also integral to crafting compelling grant applications and proposal development, which will unlock additional channels of funding. They will play a substantial role in managing annual fundraising events, a key pillar of our fundraising blueprint.

Key Responsibilities: 

Fundraising Strategy and Execution: 

  • Manage a diverse statewide portfolio assigned major giving prospects, facilitating at least 10-15 significant meetings per month with individuals and foundations. 

  • Identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit, secure, and steward individual major gift prospects contributing to $25,000 and above, local, and regional foundations, and donors with comprehensive giving capacity. 

  • Develop and implement innovative strategies for donor cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship, including new channels of fundraising.  

  • Contribute to the writing and development of compelling grant proposals, targeting local and regional funding opportunities, thereby broadening avenues for support. 

  • Collaboratively design and execute an annual major gift plan, implementing fundraising activities designed to meet an established financial goal.  

  • Proactively build and nurture relationships resulting in philanthropic revenues including initiating new relationships, maintaining and enhancing existing relationships, and providing insightful prospect/donor assessments to the Development Coordinator, fostering a healthy pipeline of potential donors  

  • Conduct detailed research and analysis of potential major gift prospects, keeping abreast of latest trends in philanthropic giving.  

  • Demonstrate and promote a comprehensive understanding of the philanthropic priorities of the non profit , effectively aligning the specific interests of prospects with the non profit's mission and needs.   

  • Plans for and initiates direct activities with prospects that are designed to enhance the affiliation between the prospect and the non profit .  

  • Regularly report on fundraising progress highlighting key performance indicators and identifying potential areas of improvement.  

  •  Effectively communicates the non profit's mission and represents the organization’s culture to external stakeholders. 

 

Administration/Events 

  • Assists in the facilitation of meetings, communications, informational exchanges and project / philanthropic coordination with non profit  staff.  

  • Craft comprehensive proposals and gift agreements, ensuring documentation and adherence to the non profit ’s proper gift documentation.  

  • Manages all correspondence with prospects, documenting communications, solicitation activities and gift information in compliance with our non profit’s prospect management guidelines.   

  • Supervises the planning and execution of annual fundraising events to meet revenue and donor engagement goals. 

  • Conducts insightful quarterly donor giving analysis to spur innovative approaches to donor stewardship and foster accuracy in goal tracking.    

  • Collaborate closely with the communications and marketing team to create compelling collateral that supports fundraising efforts, including brochures, presentations, case studies, impact stories, etc.  

Central Development Collaboration 

  • Coordinates with non profit staff to identify prospects for non profit and major giving.  

  • Uphold the highest standards of data security and privacy, ensuring the strict protection of confidential and sensitive information related to donors, prospects, and organizational strategy.  

  • Demonstrates flexibility and adaptability in taking on other related duties as required and assigned.  

  • Facilitate cross-departmental initiatives and projects to leverage organizational strengths in fundraising efforts.  

  • Plays a pivotal role in the strategic management and stewardship of all volunteer boards associated with the non profit  including fostering strong relationships, maximizing volunteer contributions, and ensuring their experiences align with the Foundation’s mission and values. 

Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s degree and four years of experience; or a high school diploma/equivalent and experience equal to eight years. (Note: post-high school education can substitute for experience at the equivalent rate.) 

  • Strong understanding of best practices in non-profit fundraising, with a particular focus on major gift solicitation.  

  • Ability to prioritize, organize and perform multiple work assignments simultaneously and accurately in a detail-oriented environment. 

  • Must be a creative thinker and recognize the impact of meaningful stewardship. 

  • A self-starter, comfortable working independently while working well in a team-oriented environment, taking the initiative to be productive and efficient. 

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and successfully manage competing deadlines. 

  • Ability to handle confidential, sensitive information with the highest degree of professionalism. 

  • Ability and willingness to travel and work flexible hours including evenings and weekends. 

  • Proficiency in the Microsoft Office products suite (Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Word), or equivalent software. 

  • Ability to exercise good judgment, demonstrate an understanding of the ethical principles associated with working in development, 

  • Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills, along with the ability to work with diverse internal and external constituencies. 

  • Proven ability to work effectively in a collaborative, team environment with a high degree of collegiality; honesty and transparency are two other important abilities. 

  • Strong written, communication, organizational, and analytical skills as well as a sense of humor. 

Preferred 

  • Demonstrated record of soliciting and closing five and six-figure philanthropic gifts. 

  • Professional experience in major gift development. Experience in a related field with basic knowledge of personal solicitation methods may also be considered. 

  • Experience with various CRM Platform or other fundraising information management systems/databases preferred.
